‘MM’ oil on canvas 50cmx60cm, my study of Manet’s painting ‘Before the mirror’, which he painted in 1846, has been included in the SCAVA “Old Masters” exhibition that will open on the 17th November.

Mist hanging low over the mountains made for a pretty, if a tad nervy ride. Zero visibility with my glasses coated in mist. Followed Craig’s bright socks hoping that he would miss holes and other obstacles. Our pony just visible.

Salt bush mark-making on the recycled plastic water bottle butterflies finished and the task of bending into the correct size butterflies completed. First butterflies positioned on the canvas, with the outcome an unknown.

Kamado Jan roast chicken with butter and thyme basting. From David Higgs cookbook Mile 8, onion ash powder, which gave the dish an amazing flavour. Didn’t have any success with the burnt onion skins, and the grilled cauliflower, dry and disappointing.

In his time Jan has been an electronics, nuclear and power system engineer, a strategist, a humanitarian and an artist. A career path linked by creativity and innovative thinking. Initially trained at the Johannesburg College of Art, Jan has won numerous international awards and has exhibited nationally and internationally. He can be found in his studio ‘Jandreart’ located at Thesen Harbour Town, Knysna.

  • Good luck with the “Masters” entry! Intriguing. I like. x
